Line strength is a trade-off. Heavier line breaks fewer fish off in weed and rock, but it casts shorter and spooks clear-water fish. Lighter line casts further and presents lures more naturally, but a snag can end the day.
For creeks with trout, 4 to 6 lb monofilament is common. For lakes and bass, 6 to 10 lb is a useful middle. Coastal fishing with a surf rod usually calls for braid of 15 to 30 lb, with a leader where the fish has teeth or the bottom is rough.
