Reading a creek in May

Where trout hold in a small stream, and how to fish the seam without spooking them.

Trout in a small creek hold where the current gives them cover and a steady supply of food. Look for the edge of a fast run, the tail of a pool, and any undercut bank. Stand back from the water and keep your shadow off the surface.

A short, light rod and a long leader let you place the fly in a few feet of water. Work the drift slowly and let the line follow the current. If the fish moves away from the seam, wait a minute before the next cast.
